Belmont Terraced Backyard

Belmont Terraced Backyard Nilsen Landscape Design, LLC is excited to share the Belmont Terraced Backyard, a stunning example of what we love to do, build beautiful and functional landscapes. Nestled in the heart of Belmont, Massachusetts, this backyard demonstrates our commitment to quality and creativity in landscape design and how it enhances the natural beauty of its surrounding. Each landscape design begins with some form of a challenge. This backyard was a steep slope which corresponded to limitations on landscape usability and accessibility. Our landscape architects and design team began to pivot toward a terraced backyard, effectively carving out the space to build commercially-available boulders and natural stone retaining walls. Not only did this create structural integrity, it added rustic character to the landscape. We utilized the terracing process to develop programming for each terrace: a garden of native plants merging in with the surrounding flora on one level, a sitting area on another level, and finally for the third level a vegetable garden, which is useful for beauty and sustenance. To help seamlessly blend the terrace and existing flora, we compiled a palette of drought resistant plants that would flourish in a New England climate. The result is a colorful display of texture, ranging from the flowering perennial to the foliage of the ornamental grass. Flowering shrubs were strategically placed around the terrace to add atmosphere and provided landscape utility by attracting wildlife. On the semicircle of the top terrace, we integrated a beautiful stone pathway, which intertwined the terraced levels together along with providing accessibility and flow. While the pathway is functional, lighting was thoughtfully included to highlight the spaces. As dusk approached, the backyard was transformed into something magical, perfect for gatherings or for quiet evenings enjoying some fresh air under the stars. Once the was finished, the client was overly pleased with the transformation. The Belmont Terraced Backyard certainly enhanced their exterior living space and home value.
