About This Project

20th Century Revival by Lorax Design Group Located in Fairway, Kansas, the '20th Century Revival' by Lorax Design Group combines historical charm and traditional landscaping techniques to reimagine the outdoor experience. This is a complete remodel of the work of landscape design to create outdoor spaces for use and aesthetic enjoyment that honor the original house, a two-story, side-gabled home from the 1920's. The '20th Century Revival' incorporates native plantings for sustainability and interest all year round. Lorax Design Group selected vibrant perennials with ornamental grasses and pruned shrubs characteristic to the times for a low maintenance landscape. A visually stunning gathering area was created by constructing a stone terrace utilizing local limestone, which respected the architectural style of the original house. One of the greatest challenges on this was the significant variance in elevation on the work site, which involved elevation changes and grading to maintain drainage and to minimize erosion. The design team proposed innovative grading solutions to ensure that the new landscape layout would flourish in the local environment while also preserving some of the existing plant materials. Building features also combined softscaping with hardscaping, merging a meandering pathway of flagstone with a renovated pond and plantings. The results were spectacular. The homeowner was excited to have the old charm restored around their home and could use and enjoy this outdoor inviting space as a virtual getaway with nods to the past. The '20th Century Revival' was not only a restoration of the landscape, but also enhanced the value of the property and further added a habitat for their family for many generations.
