About This Project

Overview of the Interface by Sweet Smiling Landscapes Located in beautiful Santa Barbara, the Interface by Sweet Smiling Landscapes has allowed us to highlight our values as a landscape firm. It exemplifies our work in the communities of Goleta, Mission Canyon, Montecito, Summerland, Toro Canyon, Ojai, and Ventura in California. In the Interface , we worked on the conversion of a backyard that was in constant disuse, into an outdoor retreat that would marry function and beauty. Our first step was to study the topography and climate of the site, ensuring that the plants and materials would thrive in the setting. The design proposition integrated native plant material, drought friendly species, and hardscape materials fit for an elegant landscape such as locally sourced stone, reclaimed wood and other natural products. The challenge we faced in the , was an environmental envelope on the property; a steep gradient to the space that can become vulnerable to erosion. Our landscape architects addressed the slope by installing a tiered garden and implementing retaining walls and terraced planting beds in order to stabilize the soil while also providing visual hierarchy to the retreat. Active site planning helped to maximize space in the landscape but also allowed for fluidity in the confusion of the garden. What we were left with at the end of the Interface was a stunning outdoor oasis equipped with a relaxing water feature, connecting pathways, and a range of seating options for leisurely and lifestyle living. The clients were also thrilled with the outdoor lighting that effectively lit the garden throughout night time creating a cozy feeling for guests.
