Lakeside Villa by Karen Aitken and Associates Set within the quietude of its sake, the Lakeside Villa showcases the design artistry and expert skill Karen Aitken and Associates bring to every landscaping . From Aromas to Carmel, we worked to transform this sizable lakeside property into a restful oasis that reflects the natural surroundings. The work demonstrated beautiful landscaping elements to promote aesthetic and functional uses of the property. We started with a careful selection of native plants with climate appropriate characteristics to ensure sustainability and low-maintenance. Strategic arrangements of wildflowers and ornamental grasses mixed bright elements together to create a tapestry of color throughout the seasons. Adding drought tolerant plants will increase water conservation efforts for water stylists while also contributing to habitat function and beauty. The design also included a central path of locally-sourced irregular flagstone that meanders throughout the property, leading visitors through engaging garden beds and seating areas. The path was thoughtfully contained by natural stones and boulders that create space while also simulate nature with natural arrangements. By utilizing the sloping topography of the site, gardens were also tiered effectively to create interest and functional drainage, preventing erosion and increasing the usability of the space. A highlight of the Lakeside Villa included a custom-built free-standing wood pergola sustainably harvested from a wood mill in the Pacific Northwest that offers the family shade for outdoor gatherings and meals together. The family added seasonal climbing vines that will bloom at different times throughout the year, bringing a picturesque scene of comfort for relaxing and entertaining. Finally, lighting was added that creates a warm ambiance for evening gatherings including the same people who surrounded the space that day. In the end, this beautiful landscape actives and interprets all that the client envisioned and more. The connection of hardscape and softscape elements create harmony and intents below or across usable space that leads to an experience of nature and design.
