MID CENTURY MODERN The ‘MID CENTURY MODERN’ garden is a beautiful reference to the architectural style of the mid-20th century, all completed by Roy Altaras Landscape Design and Build. This unique and expansive residential property, located in the centre of Beverly Hills, has been re-imagined to align with a modern and nature-focused design approach that met the desire of the client. The landscape design integrates elements that compliment the home style, which features long, unbroken lines and large open views. A defining aspect of the landscape is the intentional mixture of native drought-tolerant plants, including agave and succulents, that not only helped fulfill the aesthetic goal but also encouraged sustainable use of water. In addition, multiple tiled, natural stone walkways with intermittent pockets of healthy green lawns create an inviting space for family and guests. The landscape also dealt with moderate sloping terrain, which posed limitations on establishing adequate drainage and water erosion control. We developed beautiful terraced gardens, which helped with both drainage and erosion, while also helping add depth and visual integrity to the prior existing flat ground. Along with our terracing, we built retaining walls using local, quarried stone to accentuate the organic aesthetic of the property while also creating structure and site stability. Along with recreational landscapes, we shaped patios to merge as outdoor living spaces, which incorporated a beautifully modern outdoor chair for potential family gatherings, with a custom fire pit. An emphasis on durable, weather-resistant finishes, and responsibly sourced wood and other materials were key considerations in creating an enduring outdoor living experience for our clients. Ultimately, the biophilic echoes of the are concluded by a magically gorgeous landscape dinning space that directly relates to the architecture of the home, while creating shared enjoyment and stillness in the backyard.
