Small Yard Landscape Renovation - Living Space, Patio, Fire Pit Space Changing a small yard into a functional outdoor living space is no small task, but this is the work that is most fun and rewarding for us at The Secret Garden. This in the heart of Milwaukee highlights the work we do in the home and garden as artists and artisans. The focus of the renovation was to make the most of the space while still making the space feel warm and welcoming. We started the with a gorgeous paver patio made with materials that are tough, weather resistant, and that balance elegance with functionality. The pattern used to create the patio adds depth and movement, and softness as well as durability, making it wonderful for both entertaining guests and quietly watching the sun set on a cozy evening. To complement the patio we designed a custom-built fire pit with seating for comfort on chilly nights and evenings spent outside with friends and family. Constructed using natural stone, the fire pit sits beautifully with the patio, which is not only an attractive element of the design, but also offers warmth and light. The challenge of working with a small space is addressed by utilizing some vertical gardening techniques and raised beds, carefully placed, to display a wide variety of flowering plants and herbs without overcrowding the area. Native plants were selected for their low maintenance and hearty growth habit, as well as doing our part for the planet. The end result is a functional, inviting, and sobering design that takes the small yard and turns it into energetic outdoor living space which exceeded the original expectations of our clients. The delighted homeowners now have a lovely and serene retreat for themselves and for friends and family.
