About This Project

Ricken Residence This was completed by Ruben Valenzuela, Landscape Architect and is a great example of the integration of nature and the built environment in the foothills of Southern California. Catering to the families of San Gabriel and the San Fernando Valley, Malibu, West Los Angeles, and the Phoenix, AZ Metro Area our dedication to personal service, quality, and creativity was evident in every aspect of the stunning landscape renovation. The Ricken residence presented us with the challenge of steeply sloping ground, for which we needed to create usable space - and drainage solutions. We nested a terraced garden in the slope, utilizing natural stone from a local source for the walls. The native drought-tolerant plants demonstrate our commitment to the environment as they are grown in the climate (and use less water). The outdoor living space is highlighted by an expansive dining area that features a custom pergola made in reclaimed wood, which allows for dining outdoors every month of the year. The walking paths through the planted areas utilize permeable pavers, allowing for drainage while providing an inviting pedestrian experience in the lush gardens. To accentuate the space, we made use of LED lighting strategically placed that washes the landscape in warm light, and showcases the foliage and hardscape texture. We also considered the - selecting the furniture to provide comfort without compromising aesthetics. In the end, a spectacular outdoor room was created that not only raised the property value but provided the Ricken family with a retreat for relaxation and a point of inspiration with the surroundings. The client expressed their ecstatic appreciation, how the design melded functionality with beauty, which has since turned into a gathering space for family and friends.
