About This Project

Watson Residence Developed by Ruben Valenzuela, Landscape Architect, the Watson Residence represents great skill in landscape architecture practice, located in the San Fernando Valley. This well-constructed landscape expresses the spirit of the home, while integrating the Southern California environment. An initial, comprehensive site analysis indicated the desire for the outdoor space to function in multiple capacities. Some of the challenges related to creating usable outdoor space was the steeply sloped backyard which would need alteration, without losing its natural appeal. The designer and team tackled the challenge of establishing a terraced outdoor space using sandstone boulders sourced locally, yielding both structural integrity, and a beautiful aesthetic to the garden. To frame the lushness of the site, and adhere to both water and sustainable plant efforts, the design involved a mix of drought-tolerant and native California sage, and colorful, unique succulents and cacti. The design also showcases a meandering recycled concrete paver pathway through three separate spaces of the garden; a sitting area shaded by mature trees, a lively flower garden teeming with colors, and an outdoor kitchen complete with grill and fire pit. Illumination was also an important element of this design; LED fixtures are positioned appropriately along the pathways and to light up the important features and spaces that engage the visitor into in the evening hours. In the end, the design is truly remarkable; a space that is both well designed and functional, the Watson's have shared many memories here since completion. They have successfully achieved a natural, inviting and sustainable outdoor space, that can be enjoyed all year round. The Watson Residence truly reflects the quality craftsmanship of Ruben Valenzuela and team's dedication to enhance the natural landscape of Southern California.
