The goal of this was to design a tranquil outdoor environment that compliments the existing architecture & makes the most of the small area. The plan also includes a number of native plants to keep the area looking nice and help with native biodiversity as well. The perennials echinacea and black-eyed Susans, to a few burst in a riot of color, while ornamental grasses bring texture and interest during all four seasons. To ensure continuity with the indoor spaces, we designed a natural stone patio utilizing bluestone, which is easily found in the area and a strong surface for lounging around. Our biggest hurdle was actually the uneven ground that created drainage issues. With the design team working their magic, we were able to custom deign a solution for grading that will make sure that water will flow where it needs and never pools. We incorporated a more discreet below-patio drainage system in order to provide relief but still allow for the beauty of the landscape to flourish. And it all culminated in a beautiful backyard sanctuary that includes a seating area surrounded by colourful flower beds and a water feature that provides a lulling backdrop of sound. The client was thrilled with the end result, which not only provided them greater landscaping experience but also increased the market value and curb side appeal of their house. Christopher A.
