Lower East Side Rooftop Garden by Root & Vine Gardens Root & Vine Gardens is pleased to present the Lower East Side Rooftop Garden, a beautiful urban retreat formed at the top of a busy building. Serving the lively neighborhoods of Jersey City, Manhattan, New York and Westchester, our team was commissioned to design a rooftop that would be transformed from an underused space to an escape that would mix city and nature. The incorporated many different aspects of landscaping including using lovely native plants, colorful flowering perennials, and fragrant herbs. The materials were chosen for their durability, and Light-weight soil mixes along with sustainable composite wood decking not only lent to the aesthetics of the garden but would stand the wear of a rooftop. The design included multiple levels of greenery, raised planters offering visual interest, and though the use of a drip irrigation system, irrigation is resourceful and necessary in an urban environment. One of the "difficulties" we experienced as a team, was the restricted access for the arrival of materials, and the structural reinforcements that would be needed to support the weight of the garden. The team worked with skilled structural engineers to come up with creative solutions that allowed the rooftop to support the managed landscape without compromising the structure of the building. In the end, the result is a beautiful rooftop retreat that the client was happy to have - a space for their residents to - escape. The rooftop includes a relaxing sitting area in a cascade of greenery and color, and definitely added an elevated aesthetic to the building and added biodiversity to the urban landscape. The Lower East Side Rooftop Garden is a great example of Root & Vine's dedication to quality building and sustainable design to create a beautiful space to inspire work and thoughtful relaxation.
