Occupying a relatively small footprint, the garden was designed to utilize every inch of outdoor space while also providing serenity and peace. I utilized a refined palette of native plants, including ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and dwarf shrubs. The blend of plant selections allows for year-round beauty while also maintaining local biodiversity. The addition of bespoke raised beds enliven the space while also providing a dedicated area to grow herbs and vegetables. The garden design did present some challenges, most significantly, minimizing access to the site. We closely coordinated the delivery of materials, as well as the removal of existing materials to maintain a relatively free access point for neighboring houses. We also endeavored to utilize sustainable materials where possible, such as reclaimed wood for the garden beds and permeable pavers for the paths, that considers responsible water management as well as the influence of urban heat. The end product ultimately showcases a harmonious dialogue between natural materials and contemporary design features. The seating area is hidden in the verdant connection between the natural and built features of the garden, creating and inviting space for leisure and community. The addition of soft lighting highlights the garden in the evening, creating a magical outdoor experience post-sunset. The client was excited with the final product and expressed the garden has become an essential part of their home that has cultivated their quality of life, and provides respite from the hustle and bustle of urban living.
