Rooftop Garden on the Upper West Side, Root & Vine Gardens Perched far above the hustle and bustle of Manhattan's streets, the 'Upper West Side Rooftop Garden' is a proud statement of Root & Vine Gardens' dedication to turning urban settings into lush, green escapes. This was meant for a client looking for an oasis away from the busy city. We faced many challenges while working on this rooftop garden, including limited structure support/resources and the need to consider materials that would be lightweight. We resolved these issues by utilizing thoughtfully designed, lightweight, and durable solutions like engineered soil systems and modular planting containers that would ensure a successful garden installation without any adverse effects on the roof structure. The design blends native/adaptive plants, that not only create biodiversity but help in maintaining the plants with minimal resources. Lush ornamental grasses and perennials with bursts of color, and eye-catching succulents were chosen to showcase year-round visual interest. Flowing elevated planters, constructed of sustainably sourced hardwoods, added elegance to the planters while maximizing planting space, creating opportunities for different plant material throughout the seasons. For the overall outdoor experience, we also completed a comfortable seating area of recycled materials with durable cushions so our client can entertain or take a moment for themselves to unwind in nature. A drip irrigation system was also included to ensure minimum water usage utilizing efficient materials and resources on the roof, which shows our commitment to sustainable practices. The end product was a beautiful rooftop garden adding value to the property while providing a space for the client and their guests. Positive responses to the transformation have been overwhelming, adding yet another example of Root & Vine Gardens dedication to quality craftsmanship and innovative landscaping. This demonstrates our proficiency in turning any of the most difficult urban habitation areas into living, lush escapes.
