Urban Garden by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects Located in the busy urban landscape of Chicago, the 'Urban Garden' experience exemplifies a newer urban landscape aesthetic that balances beauty and function. Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects embraced the challenge of converting a previously neglected urban site into an active garden that serves the community and a variety of wildlife species. The design includes a variety of native plantings such as butterfly bush, coneflower, and various ornamental grasses that embellish the space while promoting biodiversity. High-quality materials like reclaimed brick and sustainable hardwood were chosen for the spacious pathways and seating areas that, while durable and appropriate, serve as an ode to the surrounding buildings' historic charm. One of the challenges presented during the was dealing with drainage in the urban landscape. Hoerr Schaudt responded with an innovative rain garden system that provided necessary stormwater management and elevated the landscape design. The rain garden absorbed the excessive stormwater, alleviating a flooding condition and also producing a rich and robust green environment that thrived in the rain. The final outcome is a beautiful urban retreat that brought the community. Features of the space, including garden beds that kids can engage with, a water feature, and shaded seating, provided a significant distinction to the urban environment. The client was extremely pleased with the transformation, as the Urban Garden became a frequent gathering spot that created community while promoting stewardship of the environment. This highlighted Hoerr Schaudt's commitment to good craftsmanship and sustainable practices, which made this another excellent Chicago landscape.
