Modern Lakefront Designed and executed in Chicago by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, the Modern Lakefront is an example of innovative design and craft in one of the most beautiful settings in the city. Perched on the peaceful shores of a lake, the manages to integrate nature with a contemporary design aesthetic to the outdoor space. This design features the juxtaposition of native plantings with modern hardscapes for a blend of nature and human interaction, creating an engaging experience from a lush landscape to a peaceful lake. The finished product uses a variety of materials including locally sourced stone and sustainably harvested hardwood to create spacious walkways and terraces that celebrate strolling and viewing the water. The site presented a major challenge in varying topography and soils, but the Hoerr Schaudt team evaluated the overall landscape and incorporated strategic drainage to handle water from run-off as one of the plant selections and to ensure healthy plants in the long run. Integrating a solution not only offered style and functionality, but also reinforced the natural conditions of the ecosystem. Moreover, an outdoor room with a beautiful fire pit along with comfortable gathering seating for enjoying with family and friends was also considered a positive addition for the client. The placement of landscape lighting offered beauty and warmth to viewing and relaxing by the water in the evenings. Overall, the Modern Lakefront is a stunning landscape that is both sophisticated and sustainable. In the end, the client complimented the integration of personal style into the natural beauty of the space.
