Modern Courtyard by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects Located within an urban cluster development, the 'Modern Courtyard' by Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects sets an example of a marriage between elegance and usefulness that serves the communities of Chicago, Chicago Heights, Elmwood Park, Glenview, Melrose Park, and Oak Park. The courtyard was conceived as a place to escape from urban living, a faceless area of concrete and grass into nature, but is perceived as a modern outdoor retreat for community and family interaction. The site was designed with a simple elegance of hardscape and softscape, accentuating the existing architecture of the buildings surrounding the courtyard. The use of locally sourced bluestone for the patio and as the primary door-to-door surface was of primary importance. The stone is not only durable in outdoor spaces, but it suits the character of the building and provides a visually pleasing and contemporary surface for the courtyard. The key challenge was site drainage and the uneven terrain of the site. In response, we proposed grading to divert drainage and applied the design over permeable pavers to create space for desired water drainage. By doing this, we created a clever and friendly design that allowed for minimal maintenance to ensure blooming throughout the season and limited local flooding. The landscape includes a collection of native landscaping with ornamental grasses and perennials to provide four-season interest, reuse of site material, and enhance local biodiversity of turf. A modern fire pit with custom seating provides a dramatic focal point and an inviting space for connection and gathering with family and friends. Upon completion, the Modern Courtyard was beyond the dreams and wildest wishes of the client, who proposed a challenging existing space into the vibrant heart of their outdoor condo complex that fosters spirit, connection, and enjoyment.
