Black Rock Prepared by Ryan Associates Landscape Architecture & Planning Located centrally within the active neighborhood serviced by Ryan Associates, the Black Rock landscaping work indicates a level of design excellence and craftsmanship. The landscape changed a pedestrian site into a captivating oasis that works with nature while offering beauty and utility. The landscaping incorporates elements throughout, including diverse native plantings that support local biodiversity. The ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and other shrubs were all selected for their aesthetics and ability to impact the long-term sustainability within a New England climate. The use of local stone for the gardens’ retaining walls and pathways promotes natural textures and resiliency in usage while providing longevity around the landscape. One of the largest challenges for the Black Rock site team was the uneven terrain itself. Grading and comprehensive planning would allow for artful fluidity across the area. Ryan Associates created a multi-tiered garden consisting of native plants that addressed the topography’s challenge and adapted to the garden aesthetics and user access desires. A natural stone fountain that serves as a point of interest and gathering, not just for humans but all wildlife around the property, supported the tranquil sounds of water flowing through the landscape. A craftwomanship concept was apparent across all detail, specifically when it come to the hardscape construction and the directionality of each plant position. To promote a sustainable site and while looking like a lush garden oasis, a design-efficient irrigation system was designed. The result of the contribution with Brown Rock was a process that resulted in an amazement of an exterior landscape that engulfed the use of the property for the client and their family’s enjoyment of relaxation, play, and youth development if joined as a family experience. The investment the landscape contributed to the surrounding values proves to present wealth in time not always easy to reenact.
