Astronomer's Residence Ryan Associates Landscape Architecture & Planning was the design firm behind the "Astronomer's Residence" , which reimagined a suburb property as an astonishing outdoor space combining a useful, delightful outdoor experience with a celestial experience. The landscape architecture team planned a landscape seeing a scintillating aesthetic while presenting opportunities to speak to the client's fervor for astronomy rooted in the community of Arlington, Boston, and Cambridge. Notably, we provided a stargazing terrace with brilliant bluestone paver tile sourced from a local vendor to offer a strong, beautiful surface at the edge of the site. The terrace was complemented by many northeast-pollinator native plant species planted in each zone adjacent to the terrace. The native plant material would be functional, perennial, and low-maintenance within the New England climate and would suppress weeds while bringing the seasonal beauty of the space to life. The perennial plants would add rich color throughout the seasons by combined gardening zones all within the aesthetic frame of the terrace. One of the site challenges we faced was the sloped terrain of the property. We developed terraced garden beds throughout the site using natural boulders, sourced, and reclaimed wood - all providing extra material. The terracing helped with drainage and helped to explore elevation differences from the slope while providing unique planting spaces and allowing for colorful plant combinations to bloom throughout each month for three of the four seasons. The culmination of the was a marriage of the earth and art expressed as a custom-built observation deck and retractable awning to comfortably experience the joy of stargazing. The deck offered quiet opt-outs to observe the sky, while trees and shrubs from the pre-planning worked to create the human experience of observing remoteness while offering encompassing views of the landscape. The client thoroughly celebrated the transformation as exciting and wholly authentic when discussing hosting friends under the starlight from their new exterior area.
