Ryan Associates Landscape Architecture & Planning served Arlington and the surrounding towns of Boston, Cambridge, and more with a that spoke to their diligence, creativity and quality. The Woodlands combines a variety of native plantings that, with careful thought and research of support local habitats, also visually adds color and texture. The design integrates native trees like Eastern Redbud and flowering shrubs like the Hydrangea to add interest all year long; and provide pollinator habitats. Pathways of locally-sourced bluestone wind their way through the landscape, providing connection and comfort. One of the main challenges in the was the sloping ground and bad soil quality, which our team effectively addressed with a conscientious soil amendment plan, and constructed tiered garden beds to better drain the rainwater, and visually add terrace levels to the space. The use of permeable pavers for the patio space is another sustainable solution for rainwater infiltration through the use of native groundcover plants that creates more pervious and functional spaces. The hub of the Woods is a custom, [unique] design of a fire pit area that is accompanied in its surroundings by natural boulders, perennial planting that is low maintenance, and create an inviting atmosphere for connection amongst families and friends. The water feature adds a serenity to the auditory spaces of bribes and bee sounds meant to replicate the calming sound of babbling brook, again creating a space of relaxation and peace. Overall, the outcome was a stunning landscape that delighted not only the client but the client's family as well. The Woodlands shows Ryan Associates' commitment to their craft, innovative design choices, and use of sustainable practices.
