Goodbye Lawn, Hello Color! The 'Goodbye Lawn, Hello Color!' , designed by Kristen Rudger Landscape Design, converted a conventional lawn into a colorful, low-water-use landscape in the middle of the San Francisco Peninsula. Serving clients in Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, and beyond, Kristen Rudger Landscape Design embraced the opportunity of transforming such a high-water-usage landscape into a vibrant, sustainable landscape that reflected the client's vision. The included elaborate designs incorporating drought-tolerant plants including California natives, ornamental grasses, and flowering plants with the intent for color and seasonal interest throughout the calendar year. The use of permeable pavers in the walkways elevated the aesthetic appeal of the landscape while ensuring appropriate drainage, which allows the clay soil to dry out in the rainy season. One of the largest challenges was to remove the existing lawn without negatively affecting the mature trees. Our team successfully used methods and equipment which preserved the trees' surroundings while introducing the new landscape design. The existing site demands careful consideration and planning which resulted in a seamless flow through spaces including a cozy seating area with colorful planters and a trellis that houses climbing vines we constructed. The final result is a beautiful landscape that is low-maintenance for the client and creates a positive impact on the environment by reducing water usage and increasing habitat for beneficial wildlife. The result was a successful transformation from a traditional lawn to an enviable, colorful garden. The client enjoyed their beautiful, colorful outdoor space that was functional and inspiring-design, embodying modern California living.
