Arthur Astor Carey House, Cambridge Located in the historic center of Cambridge, the Arthur Astor Carey House was beautifully transformed by Melissa MacDonald, Landscape Architect. The design connected the house's historic architecture to a new landscape design that provided significant curb appeal while respecting the history. A harmonious mix of robust perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs were used to create year-round layering of color and interest. Local stone was used to construct pathways surrounding the structure, providing durability and complementing the existing stone used on the house, which helped the landscaping have a timeless and cohesive feel. A unique feature of the was a water feature that provided soothing background sounds while attracting wildlife to the property. Carefully planned during construction to minimize disturbance to the existing topography and natural drainage, the water feature was challenging to include because decisions had to be carefully made. Also included was an inviting outdoor living area that included custom seating and a fire pit to make the space functional for gatherings and family time. High-quality and sustainable materials were used to provide the aesthetics desired by the client while ensuring durability and a minimal carbon footprint. There were unique challenges Melissa MacDonald and her team successfully addressed through their dedication to quality and attention to detail, including navigating local zoning regulations and making design changes when testing the site’s microclimate. The results of their efforts produced a landscape that enhanced the value of the property, and the client was immensely satisfied with the final outcome.
