Located in Newton, Massachusetts, this residential landscape combines utility and elegance for the Newton family. The began with a full site analysis, not only of the existing landscape but also the family's vision for the . The features a large outdoor entertaining space with a custom-built stone patio made of locally sourced bluestone; it provided a durable, stunningly aesthetic base for entertaining. Surrounding the patio is a beautifully designed garden area that returns native plantings, adding interest to the space while helping to promote biodiversity. As with all s, we faced a few challenges with the space such as the uneven topography of the site. We designed tiered garden beds, effectively adding visual interest while solving drainage issues. The tiered garden beds are planted with a mix of perennials, ornamental grasses, and flowering shrubs to create year-round color and texture. Additionally, a wooden pergola adds an attractive focal point and shade for the space during the hot summer days. While aesthetics are important, sustainability played an even larger role in the landscape design process. Paths use permeable pavers to reduce runoff that contribute to unnecessary stormwater runoff (e.g., hardscapes and impermeable surfaces). The use of the rain garden itself helps to effectively deal with stormwater. The plants and hardscapes were selected intentionally so the landscape works with minimal maintenance and thrives. The end result is a beautiful outdoor living space in harmony with the natural landscape, along with the resulting organism interactions and experiences between the natural world and the Newton family. Now the family has an outdoor space for family gatherings that is functional and elegant while providing a calming and serine place to retreat back to. Ultimately the Newton Family Haven embodies Melissa MacDonald's commitment to quality, creativity, and commitment to the client while being exceptionally representative of the Greater Boston area's landscapes.
