Halcyon by Melissa MacDonald, Landscape Architect The Halcyon , with a location in the center of Greater Boston, exemplifies the integration of nature and design, shaping an ordinary suburban yard into a calm oasis. Melissa MacDonald, a professional landscape architect, led this undertaking for clients in Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, and other surrounding areas. This truly demonstrates her commitment to quality and attention to detail. The design illustrates a balance of native plantings, with a selection of colorful perennials and beautiful shrubs, all chosen to thrive in the New England climate, providing year-round interest. Stone walkways, made of local granite, invite visitors to stroll through the garden, while allowing for natural drainage. An impressive water feature which is modeled after a calm pond draws in wildlife and allows you to experience the garden at a different level. In the process of the design, Melissa faced various challenges, the back yard being very uneven and having soil that did not allow for quality growing conditions. Melissa demonstrated creative and innovative grading and amendment techniques to ensure the landscape held an aesthetic appeal over the long term to the landscape. Ultimately, what emerged was an incredibly beautiful outdoor space that met the expectations of the client and embraced the natural beauty of the region as well. The Halcyon is a reminder of Melissa MacDonald's vision, design ability, and dedication to engaging landscapes, with a final product that showcases thoughtful stewardship of open space in Arlington and beyond.
