Evanston Lakefront Retreat

Evanston Lakefront Retreat Located just off Lake Michigan, Greenwise Organic Lawn Care and Landscape Design took a typical backyard on the city's Evanston lakefront and created a tranquility that blends with nature as part of the 'Evanston Lakefront Retreat' . Tasked with providing a beautiful landscape for the property while also ensuring sustainability, our team went to work for this residential client based in the greater Chicago area. In the first phase of this , our designers completed a detailed site analysis of the lakefront, observing the specific microclimates and soil conditions for each area across the site. We looked to add a variety of native plants including butterfly milkweed and black-eyed Susans, that not only flourish here, but also benefit the local wildlife and pollinators. Organic mulch and compost soil building increased health, vitality and low-maintenance growth. A custom built patio features natural stone, which creates a great outdoor entertaining area with an extremely unique and high-end feel. The stone, in warm tones that embrace the natural vistas or colours of the landscape and originate from a local quarry, adds to that sense of place. We created winding paths to make the garden more accessible and breezy, with pervious pavers that can absorb rainwater to replenish the soil and reduce runoff. With the property being so near the lake, water drainage on the property was one of our challenges. To address this, we created a rain garden, planted with appropriate native vegetation, that intercepts and filters stormwater runoff and introduces a striking feature to the landscape. This solved drainage problems, but also helped the site to be more resilient ecologically. What the 'Evanston Lakefront Retreat' ultimately provides is a synthesis of form and function in which every detail has a reason to be there. The client came back saying how happy they were with the end result, that it has become an oasis where they can escape and also a place to reconnect with nature.
