Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design LLC transformed an uninspired rooftop into an engaging retreat space, both for relaxation and socializing. The offered a range of landscape features, including vibrant perennial gardens, ornamental grasses of varying heights, and native shrubs, that offer beautiful aesthetics while incorporating and supporting local ecology. The use of premium materials allowed for the design of strong, durable composite decking as a beautiful contrast to the green vegetation while being low maintenance. The roof structure had a weight restriction, so one of the main design challenges was to carefully create a lightweight soil system that was conducive to healthy plant growth in line with the engineering parameters. The irrigation system was planned carefully to integrate with the existing drainage system to avoid excess weight due to water. The completed showcases beautiful elements including tiered seating areas for gathering and shady nooks for quiet reading. The lighting system enhances the ambiance for an evening in the outdoors star gazing. The client was so pleased with the and the incorporation of nature and ecology into their urban lifestyle. The rooftop provides a beautiful sanctuary where they can enjoy views of the city skyline while remaining connected to nature.
