Charles River Garden Completed by: Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design LLC Location: Stoneham The Charles River Garden sits along the banks of the Charles River, perfectly balancing design and functionality for a longtime resident of Stoneham. The result of an ambitious landscaping , the garden transforms an underused outdoor space into an artistic oasis with a unique composition of native plants, hardscape, and sustainable practices. It all started with a site visit to assess the site conditions and challenges posed by the proximity of the river, such as soil erosion and moisture management. Our team engaged the client in discussions surrounding these issues, while building a drainage system from a series of permeable pavers and a natural stone retaining wall to both enhance aesthetics and environmental justice. The focal point of the garden is a multi-tiered terrace with spectacular views of the river floods, connecting the home and outdoor living areas to the landscape. We chosen a plant palette of astoundingly hardy native plants (wildflowers and shrubs) to succeed in the local climate while being a food source for pollinators and increasing biodiversity. Within the terrace are a couple of handcrafted wooden pergolas (that provide shade and acts as a framework to the original design), to add luxurious seating for relaxing or gathering in small groups. Each aspect of the was considered thoughtfully to offer a visual interest across the year; thus, making this landscape a breathtaking retreat through each season. In the end, the culminated in a landscape that satisfied the client's vision and improved the ecological integrity of the site. The Charles River Garden is a testament to Ill River Garden's craft and "real-time" design, with no other client being happier in their new outdoor experience.
