12. Provincetown in Arlington This , completed by Natalie DeNormandie, demonstrates thoughtful integration of design and nature to address the needs of the client. Located in Arlington, the work changed a standard suburban backyard into an outdoor space reminiscent of the beautiful landscape of Provincetown. The design includes a thoughtful selection of native plants including hardy shrubs and flowering perennial plants that thrive in Massachusetts while also providing color and texture throughout the seasons. The hardscape materials - locally sourced bluestone for pathways and patio spaces - help to create a natural flow within the design. Decorative gravel beds serve not only as an aesthetic element, but also provide drainage functionality. One of the main hurdles for this was dealing with the slope of the site. Natalie and her planning team dealt with the grading, allowing for tiered plant beds that alleviated drainage concerns and added another layer of interest and depth within the design. Another striking element of the design was a calming water feature that attracted local wildlife while providing sounds of nature. In conclusion, this outdoor space is both stunning and practical, marrying the existing architecture with the landscape enhancement to provide the client with a place to relax and recreate.
