Backyard Landscape and Pool Renovation by Waibel & Associates Landscape Architecture Located in the heart of Ahwatukee, Waibel & Associates Landscape Architecture transformed a dated backyard landscape and pool area into an oasis for enjoyment and relaxation. The firm services the communities of Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix, and Scottsdale and provided this family of four with a complete backyard renovation that reflects modern design, while incorporating functional outdoor living space. Our team of professionals completely re-imagined the existing pool area by adding sleek, natural stone coping that compliments the colored, shimmering pool water. The patio surrounding the pool was custom designed using travertine pavers, giving the homeowner plentiful space for lounging and social gatherings. High-quality, native plants including colorful desert succulents and ornamental grasses were incorporated into the design to improve the overall aesthetics of the space, while helping to promote sustainability into the existing arid climate. One challenge that we faced was the landscape slope of the site. The grading required the designs to take additional design consideration, as we wanted to address drainage and the potential of erosion immediately around the pool area. Our skilled team utilized boulders and terraced plantings, not only to mitigate the worst-case drainage scenario and erosion, but to highlight them as natural barriers and focal points in the landscape. In addition to this, the lovely fire pit area was incorporated into the backyard space to allow cozy gatherings at night with built-in seating to accompany this beautiful area. The landscape lighting was also strategically placed to expose the backyard garden areas with the outdoor living space created earlier in the design. The overall result was breathtaking and exceeded expectations. With an engaging outdoor area incorporating multiple transitions from the pool, to the patio space, to the lush landscape elements, not one portion of the backyard stole the show away from the other. At the end of the day, the client family now has a little piece of nowhere, right in their own backyard, for quiet moments, as well as room to enjoy the company of family and friends.
