About This Project

Desert - Sustainable Landscape The 'Desert - Sustainable Landscape' was completed by Waibel & Associates Landscape Architecture and represents a new way of thinking desert landscaping for the arid climate of Ahwatukee, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe. The intention was to create a sustainable landscape utilizing and enhancing the beauty of the desert. The design with its native and drought-tolerant plants and boulders achieved a stunning visual while providing great reductions in water use. The team, again, used local materials including decomposed granite for walkways and salvaged reclaimed wood to create functional outdoor structures. Through the process, the irrigation drainage of the site was remedied by installing a rain garden and permeable pavers that allowed a better way to manage water. Erosion was reduced while improving groundwater recharge to the ecology. At the completion of the , the clients were ecstatic how the landscape turned out. The new design provides a calming respite fully engaged with the beauty of color and texture with the changing seasons. The sustainable features of the landscape provide reduced maintenance costs while also being responsible for the environment, establishing Waibel & Associates’ as a model of sustainable landscaping for the future. I was reminded again of Waibel & Associates' high quality and creativity along with the satisfaction of the client.
