Backyard Entertaining by Karen Aitken and Associates In Silicon Valley, a small backyard was transformed into an entertaining oasis, by designer Karen Aitken and Associates. Serving clients from Aromas to Pebble Beach, our team developed this with a focus on function and beauty. The challenge was to create a cohesive flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces and maximize the limited square footage available. We began by incorporating striking composite decking to serve as seating, gathering, and entertaining spaces, with built-in seating on two sides and LED lighting to shine through the early evening, providing ambience. Next, a fire pit surrounded by natural stone-like seating was added to the back of the deck for warmth and respite. As part of the overall design, our plans included a mix of drought-tolerant plants, including native California plants, which thrive in the local climate and create lush, vibrant color. Permeable pavers were selected to aid in drainage while maintaining sustainable and beautiful landscaping. An exciting addition to the property was the multi-tiered herb and vegetable garden that allows the clients to grow their own fresh ingredients for their outdoor meals. A custom deck pergola with climbing vines provided shade, adding comfort and beauty to the site. During the , the team had to contend with existing uneven topography and drainage concerns. Innovative grading solutions and planting combinations resolved the challenge, extending longevity and success of the plants. Both clients were excited to have their own backyard that felt appropriate both functionally and aesthetically. The whole added a striking, elegant improvement to the outdoor experience, allowing for family and friends to gather for meaningful experiences.
