Neutra: Hafley House by Lisa Gimmy Landscape Architecture The Neutra: Hafley House , located in the heart of the Greater Los Angeles area, showcases a modern sleekness and a commitment to environmental responsibility. The involved refurbishing the outdoor spaces at an iconic mid-century residence, and Lisa Gimmy Landscape Architecture took a thoughtful design approach by using indigenous plants to support biodiversity while working with the original design vision created by architect Richard Neutra. The resulted in an extensive palette of drought-tolerant vegetation consisting of California lilacs, agaves, and ornamental grasses for the aesthetic element, and the intention to sustain this landscape in the arid climate. Using high quality local materials of flagstone and permeable pavers, inviting pathways and patios were created to work with the existing topography. A significant challenge was the varying topography of the site which was addressed with terracing and boulders in an artful and interesting way. The diverse rock and stone sizes, colors, and types added to the aesthetic quality and offered stability. An effective irrigation system was utilized that managed water use while keeping plants healthy. The result is an extraordinary outdoor living oasis providing the setting for contemplation and relaxation while providing beauty courtesy of California native plants. The client is very pleased with their transformed outdoor spaces that contribute to their living experience and demonstrates a commitment to sustainable landscape design.
