Dreary Space Under Deck - Transformed

Dreary Area Under Deck - Transformed Terra Design is excited to share their dramatic redesign of an unused, under-deck area into a cheerful retreat called "Dreary Area Under Deck - Transformed." Serving the Ballard, Beacon Hill, Mercer Island, and Seattle communities, we were challenged by our clients to repurpose this previously neglected area, into a usable and beautiful backyard getaway. Starting with a wet, dark area that had no charm, let alone functionality, our excellent designers worked with our clients to develop their idea of a cozy, and inviting space. We attended to the moisture issue first - we clea­red the area, and installed a professional, durable drainage system that ensures the area remains dry and usable, year-round. For aesthetics, we specified materials that were beautiful and usable, such as weather-resistant composite decking and natural stone pavers that are consistent with the existing architecture. To introduce impact in designs with shade, we designed and implemented vertical gardens and introduced beautiful greens such as ferns, hostas and grasses. To assist with usability, we specified outdoor lighting fixtures to illuminate the area, creating a warm atmosphere for socializing throughout spring and summer evenings. A custom built wooden bench provides added comfort and usability, while the focal point of the fire pit, creates interest, and is perfect for evenings under the stars! Navigating limited access and a timeline for the were both challenges we encountered along the way; however, we persev­ered through planning and wonderful craftsmanship, delivery a product that our clients absolutely loved. Adding a functional space to client’s homes, and increasing their property value are satisfying, rewarding feelings we get to enjoy here at Terra Design. As mentioned, our clients loved their newly constructed and designed backyard retreat and they shared positivity with our Terra Design process providing a combination of both nature and quality design. As a designer, I believe every space has the opportunity for beauty and usefulness, which I think speaks to this .
