About This Project

Contemporary Inspiration SURROUNDS Landscape Architecture + Construction is excited to introduce "Contemporary Inspiration," an upscale landscape that redefines the concept of modern design while respecting the natural beauty of the landscape of Virginia and Maryland. From Aldie to Arlington, we challenged ourselves with transforming a traditional backyard into a modern backyard sanctuary. The site featured a carefully designed elevated plan with bold geometric planting beds, a modern water feature, and an overall outdoor living experience. Utilizing natural stone pavers, sustainably harvested hardwood decks, and plantings native to the region, we carefully balanced minimal maintenance with the value of biodiversity. Incorporation of LED landscape lighting for the architecture also provided an inviting evening glow for entertainment beyond the sunset. One particular challenge of the was the significant grade, which meant that drainage would be an important part of extending the life of the landscape features. Our team provided a tiered design solution that actually improved drainage as well as creating a more diverse landscape. The end result was a truly stunning outdoor space that thrilled our client, complete with a designated welcoming fire pit area well suited to be surrounded by plants, a water feature that calms while serving as an anchoring focal point, and a care-free planting design arranged to have blooming color around each holiday. The attention of the planting design made an easier transition from hardscape to softscape, creating a reimagined outdoor landscape space that welcomed outdoor entertaining or cozy downtime with a good book, coffee, tea or every sour of refreshment in between.
