About This Project

River's Edge by SURROUNDS Landscape Architecture + Construction The 'River's Edge' develops along the quiet banks of a winding stream and captures the design and craft prowess of SURROUNDS Landscape Architecture + Construction. Our clients are from Aldie, Ashburn and all points beyond and this was a transformational experience in outdoor living. At 'River's Edge' is a beautiful native plant garden to improve biodiversity in the area and offer a peaceful refuge. We provided a palette of perennials, deciduous shrubs and ornamental grasses selected for color and arranged based on bloom succession to add interest throughout the seasons. Materials such as stone for the pathways and durable, environmentally compliant decking were selected and sourced locally. A challenge of this was to navigate the varying elevations along the riverbank. We developed a system of terraced seats that provided organization promote erosion mitigation while creating visual interest in the layers of the landscape. Boulders were then added to the arrangement that acted both as functional retaining walls while working as organic pieces of art. A custom-built, in-ground fire pit called to social engagement throughout the seasons, accompanied by seating and lighting that helped frame the surrounding plantings. The wooden pergola offered shade and focal point for the space. Once the fire pit was assembled, our team added a decorative water feature that would echo the sounds of the stream beyond, as well as support the goal of a peaceful place to enjoy the landscape. In the end, 'River's Edge' is a stunning landscape that met and exceeded the desires of the client. It showcases the quality, innovation, and balance in functional landscape design that SURROUNDS provides. Starting with the initial consultation and concluding with walk-through, this was supported with an absolute commitment to customer service and satisfaction with a new outdoor space.
