Waban Hillside Completed by Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design LLC, the Waban Hillside illustrates the firm’s goal of transforming difficult sites into beautiful exterior spaces. Located in the scenic hills of Stoneham, this involved the careful design and execution of a multi-tiered garden that works well with the physical site conditions. The landscape consists of beautifully varied native plants, which have been selected for durability and attractiveness. Custom stone blocks using locally sourced granite provide fabulously rustic and practical site lines and retain soil stability. The use of permeable pavers creates an inviting path through the space, where people can stroll while also carrying water away from the perimeter of the garden and contributing to sustainability. One special challenge of the site was the steep sloping site, with grading required for stabilization and soil erosion management. Techniques were designed to characterize the land for advancement, and ultimately to raise both beauty and usefulness with terracing. By manipulating the topography, a water feature was erected as the garden's centerpiece, and contributes greatly to the perceived tranquility of the garden. The result is a beautiful retreat that is modeled well into the hillside, giving the homeowners a peaceful place for quiet reflection, family time and entertaining.
