Modern Backyard in Houston, TX The backyard renovation, 'Modern Backyard', was completed for Gregory/Henry Landscapes in Houston, TX, successfully combines modern design with practical outdoor space. In the vivacious urban environment of Houston, this backyard renovation transformed a standard yard into a beautiful escape that mirrors the homeowner's modern style. Modern design was established through clean lines and bars; a sophisticated outdoor kitchen, contrasted in both color and material, used commercial quality stainless steel appliances and a luxurious granite countertop. To surround this kitchen we developed a large outdoor patio area with high-quality porcelain paving materials, offering both durability and comfort underfoot. Among the diverse material portfolio, we used natural stone veneer to develop the retaining walls, which provided structural integrity of the areas elevated above grade and offered natural beauty. An element of significant challenge was the pitch of backyard. As a result, we graded the area to provide easy transition from the outdoor patio to garden beds and the fire pit area. With this level of grading experimentations, we ensured all portions of the transition were simple and easy to manageement for functionality, aesthetics, and ease of use. Finally, sustainable practice was displayed by incorporating drought tolerant and native Texas plants into the landscape. This helped with sustainability and aesthetics. Additional outdoor lighting integrated into the design replaced existing lighting fixtures, and directed focus on the architectural aspects of the yards spaces for evening use. The finished product established a modern integrated space that not only met the desires but greatly exceeded our client's expectations. The client truly appreciated the duality of trained nature paired with modern design and space during their time outdoors, and we enjoyed providing the customer with this unique opportunity to host outdoors, relax, or ponder new ideas.
