About This Project

Bonita Canyon Backyard and Kitchen Molly Wood Garden Design is thrilled to share the Bonita Canyon Backyard and Kitchen, which has taken outdoor living to a new level in Newport Beach! This expansive beautifully blended form and function, as the clients were looking for a space that could serve as their kitchen but also be a place to relax. The includes a highly functional outdoor kitchen space with high-end stainless-steel appliances, a custom stone pizza oven, and an enormous granite counter where the clients can host guests and enjoy cooking. Around the kitchen, we have also provided a wonderful takeover seating area with natural cedar wood benches that allow the client to enjoy exceptional outdoor dining. The lighting is also key to improving the usable time in the outdoor space. So we designed ambient lighting to be throughout the landscape to showcase all the lush plantings and create a warm and inviting space in the evening. A well-designed landscape with drought-tolerant plants, including many native species for California, adds beauty with a variety of blooms year-round, pleasing the clients with a minimally managed outdoor space. Additionally, one of the major issues with this backyard was the slope of the property; therefore, we designed terraces to add some interest to the home but also to allow for a place to entertain and plant. Furthermore, by utilizing locally sourced stone for the retaining walls, provided color and cohesive look, while effectively retaining and draining water for erosion. We think this turned out beautifully, and we could not have been happier with the reaction of the client. Every day, the clients are able to live in a well-integrated area of their home that reflects their lifestyle, whether it is for outdoor cooking or getting away from it all to relax.
