The Cheviot Hills Residence is a stunning transformation of a 1940s California bungalow that preserves the charm of its original features while embracing modern functionality. The project was undertaken with the goal of enhancing the living experience for the long-time owners, who have cherished this home since 1975. The scope of work focused on enlarging and brightening the kitchen, adding a bathroom and walk-in closet to the master bedroom, renovating the existing bathroom, and incorporating additional storage solutions, all without increasing the home’s square footage. A thoughtful design approach was adopted, utilizing a simple material palette that fosters harmony between the newly created spaces and the existing architecture. Key design elements include floating white base cabinets in the kitchen, which not only maximize storage but also enhance the sense of light and openness. The introduction of skylights and the consolidation of smaller windows into a larger, singular window flood the kitchen with natural light, transforming it into a vibrant gathering space. In the master suite, the addition of a bathroom and walk-in closet is seamlessly integrated, with frosted glass panels serving as a stylish division that allows light to flow between the two spaces. This design choice not only adds privacy but also creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, particularly at night when the glass panels emit a soft, glowing effect.
