View Terrace by Urban Botanics The View Terrace is a beautiful example of Urban Botanics' commitment to their craft and design in the Oakland hills. This landscape design was intended to augment the breathtaking views while providing a nurturing outdoor respite for the homeowners. This includes a multi-layered terrace garden crafted of local stone pavers that comfortably sit within the natural topography. Eco-friendly, drought-resistant native plants, like California poppy, lavender, and succulents, were used to create a colorful, drought tolerant landscape with sustainability and low-maintenance as key priorities. One of the major challenges in this was the steep slope of the property, which meant finding creative terracing solutions to generate usable outdoor areas while protecting the integrity of the hillside. We were able to design a minor retaining wall system and a drainage plan that would hold sand and soil in place while directing surface runoff water along the hardscape and back toward the neighborhood municipal drainage system. In the end, the result was an exceptional outdoor living area with a beautiful seating space, a fire-pit for evening relaxation, and a meandering pathway leading deeper into the environment. The materials and plants selected also contributed to the aesthetic and native beauty, inviting biodiversity into the landscape.
