Hillside Courtyard Rain Garden Carried out by Merge Studio, the Hillside Courtyard Rain Garden is a beautiful demonstration of designing landscape in Sonoma County's North Bay that is inventive. The developed a steep hillside that had previously gone under utilized into an incredible rain garden that simultaneously beautifies the property and address important environmental issues. With the use of native plants that thrive in the region's climate, our team worked to design a garden that would require less maintenance and was resilient. The plants included vibrant California poppies, fragrant sage, and lush ferns that also support local pollinators. The rain garden installed boulders and gravel pathways are used to direct water and runoff as part of a natural filtration system as well as the preventative measure of reducing erosion on the hillside. One major challenge we faced was managing a steep gradient across the site, and how to manage water and utilize placements of plants. Although, our skilled team designed tiered planters to maximize space and to allow water drainage. This design feature also allowed rainwater to be collected and redirected into the garden to enhance plant growth and encourage healthy runoff. The final outcome is a peaceful courtyard garden that accomplishes functionality and natural beauty simultaneously. The pleasant arrangement of plants and water features created a relaxing escape, which has pleased our client. Now they have a colorful outdoor area that adds value to their property, encourages local wildlife, and contributes positively the ecosystem.
