Family Home in Wellesley Designed by Melissa MacDonald, Landscape Architect, the 'Family Home in Wellesley' represents a superior level of design and craftsmanship in the Greater Boston landscape. Located in Wellesley Center, this residential renovation is in keeping with the natural beauty of the area while enhancing the property’s function and aesthetics. The started with a thorough site analysis, which revealed some challenges to be addressed, such as sloped terrain and areas of limited sunlight. Melissa and her team developed a comprehensive solution that addressed these identified challenges, and produced a welcoming outdoor area for family gathering and relaxation. A multi-tiered garden defined the essence of the design, constructed of locally sourced stone for the retaining walls that define the space visually as well as give structural support. The garden features a broad assortment of native plants, in particular perennials and ornamental grasses, known to be resilient and low maintenance, to provide visual interest year-round. To enhance the practicality of the outdoor area, a patio was custom built on site from natural bluestone, providing a space for dining, which also looks natural among the lush surrender. A path made of reclaimed bricks winds its way through the garden towards the back of the yard, providing a sense of exploration, and connection, to the landscape. Integrated lighting was added to highlight of the architectural features of the home and the pathways through the garden to create a fantastical feeling at night. Melissa exhibited extensive consideration of the and care for sustainable materials throughout the . She developed an innovative rain garden to address drainage issues while capturing runoff and creating an environment for biodiversity. The final result is a beautiful landscape that connects with the family’s lifestyle and connection to the outdoors.
