High Desert Retreat This exquisite is dubbed 'High Desert Retreat' and was completely realized by Ben Young Landscape Design all while producing a masterclass in landscape design in the warm high desert of Sun Valley, ID. This lofty plan balances the craggy nature of the land with contemporary design language, resulting in a relaxation area for the home owners to enjoy. A site analysis was the first step in the , understanding the high desert environment and its extraordinary elements such as an arid climate and rocky topography. We faced many obstacles, including fierce winds and minimal soil quality and water availability, to begin full implementation of xeriscaping. This led to a climate durable landscape that sustains itself with little irrigation. The key features are a carefully composed path of locally sourced flagstone that ushers visitors through a colorful tapestry of dry-land native plants, including species such as sagebrush, yucca, and desert marigold. The materials were purposefully chosen to include naturally weathering stone and composites that are both durable and sustainable, blending beautifully into the native landscape. We added a tranquil outside water feature, using a recirculating water system designed to use as little water as possible while still providing the gentle sound of moving water. Gravity Stone provides a very natural looking fire pit area where it becomes a gathering space under those stars to enjoy family and friends. The end product is a beautiful desert escape that honors the delicate balance of the high desert environment while still delivering above and beyond the client, guidelines. The homeowners were pleased that their lifestyle and love of the outdoors was reflected in a home that elegantly bridges the lines between nature and design into a perfect getaway.
