About This Project

Los Angeles Neighborhood Friendly Garden by June Scott Design The Neighborhood Friendly Garden located in the center of Los Angeles, California, reflects a perfect balance of aesthetic beauty with environmentally sustainable landscaping design by June Scott Design. This serves various neighborhoods inlcuding Glendale, Pasadena, and Culver City. The designer team was able to take a ho-hum yard and create an inviting garden to foster community, interaction, and ecological balance. Native plants make up the primary plant palette of this garden and were chosen for their low water needs and ability to attract a diverse group of pollinators. The designer team also created a garden atmosphere using sustainable materials, raining from permeable pavers for the pathways to reclaimed wood for the garden borders. The pathways make the entire space accessible while improving drainage and reducing runoff. A challenging aspect of the site was the slope of the land which required creative grading solutions to direct water and maintain soil well, and so we used terracing for tiered planting beds. Not only did the terracing create visual interest and manage erosion, it increassed the use one could make of a small enclosed space. The final product is beautiful and usable landscape design including a community gathering area with a rustic wooden porch, ideal for go families and neighbors to use for barbeques. In addition to the impressive gathering space, the garden also boasts a thriving herb spiral, raised vegetable beds, and butterfly garden that invite both residents and guests into horticultural activities while learning gardening practices and horticulture's connection to sustainability. The clients were overwhelmingly satisfied with the outcome and thrilled by the duality of beauty and function of the garden's every aspect, as well as the sense of community that they created by working together.
