Being more than the product of an ingenious design, it is perhaps more impressive due to the dedication of the builder. Re-imagining a steeply graded site into an outdoor oasis forged a memorable marriage between nature and design. The first feature of the is a series of stone steps constructed of natural bluestone harvested within the vicinity, forming a durable and appealing landscape element. Each step is edged with native planting designed to make the most of Huntington’s incredible surroundings while allowing for low maintenance and sustainability. Different ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and light fixture were used to enhance the palette, and were layered with consideration for day and night viewing to keep the display lively. Designing the came with challenges. The designers dealt with naturally steep terrain and rocky substrate, which became an engineering problem to maintain overall stability and safety. The builders devised a unique tiered formation to taper the grade of the steep slope producing the natural design that the owners sought to minimize maintenance and increase the potential for planting interests. Natural built landscape elements were made from a series of retaining walls and natural stone boulders, which filled in and leveled off the slope to meld into the hillside while still allowing for support. The end result is breathtaking, promoting several visual and view-promoting experiences as guests ascend through and experience the lovely views of the surrounding hills and valleys. We realized the owners’ dream of a tranquil retreat while curating to reflect an overall feeling of peace and being in the garden. The 'Stairway to Heaven' represents not a , but an experience overall; a wonderful balance of beauty, usability, and environmental awareness that continues to delight all who visit.
