About This Project

Information: Taming a Slope Peter Bochenek and Associates, Inc. is proud to present the “Taming a Slope,” a redesign of the landscaping in the scenic hills of Chapel Hill and Durham. This was born out of the challenging conditions of dealing with a steep slope, as well as a desire to beautify the space. A carefully designed multi-level landscape was created with natural stone retaining walls to both stabilize the slope and create a captivating feature. The walls were built out of local granite to last in that environment as well as to integrate with the community. Native plant selections, including ornamental grasses and flowering perennials, were included to keep color and texture through the seasons and to support the local ecosystem. Erosion control was a major challenge on the site. To mitigate issues with erosion, a drainage area was installed that re-routed water flow and reduced the likelihood of soil erosion issues. Perforated pipes and gravel were concealed under entirely green vegetation to maintain function and aesthetics. The was a tremendous success, exceeding the client’s expectations to turn an unusable area into a magnificent outdoor living space. Overall, the tiered gardens allow for exploration and contemplation, and the thoughtful plantings create a calming and serene environment. High-quality craftsmanship combined with attention to detail created both value and a space for the client to enjoy a beautiful, sustainable landscape for years to come. Taming a Slope is yet another example of how we continue to strive for excellence in our landscaping services, transforming challenges into opportunities for beauty and function.
