We wanted an entryway that felt both functional and beautiful while also incorporating the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. This included a complete overhaul of the existing backyard that involved the design of an expansive multi-level deck of sustainably sourced ipe wood for both durability and beauty. The perfect spot for family gatherings or entertaining guests, the inviting space offers custom-built seating areas. To take full advantage of outdoor living, we added a natural-stone fire pit for warmth and ambience on cool evenings. We worked with the variable climate of the region to provide low-maintenance landscaping that included native plants and drought-resistant planting. To maximize wildlife support, we chose a colorful variety of perennial and ornamental grasses, with evergreen shrubs to provide winter interest. Linking the deck to a quiet seating corner amid the dense foliage, a path of permeable pavers meanders, inviting wandering and dwelling in the surrounding green. An ongoing difficulty throughout the was how uneven the area was, meaning creative serration solutions had to be used regularly to achieve drainage plus flat surfaces. Despite these challenges, our talented team was able to work through them to provide the client with a product that not only worked but also worked better than expected. The end product is an inspiring outdoor space that embodies the client's goals and way of life. Combining timber, plywood, and building additions both semi-public and semi-private combines to make a peaceful space fully accessible for both reflection and raucous get-togethers.
