Saugatuck Island Designed by David Verespy, ASLA and completed by the Rock Spring Design Group LLC, this landscape from the Rock Spring Design Group LLC is a remarkable example of the firm's design capabilities and commitment to excellence. Located in a beautiful coastal area, it involved the redesign of the outdoor landscape for function and aesthetics. The design consists of a blend of native plantings carefully selected to grow well in the environment and attract pollinators. There is also a layered promenade of plantings featuring a tapestry of greens in bloom and color changes that add spectacular changes with seasons. The furniture consists of durable natural stone pathways and sustainable hardwood decking that will last many years and, if any wear occurs, it will not be out of character with native materials. There are also thoughtfully located boulders to enhance the natural beauty and create stability in the sloped area with dynamic landscape features. The biggest challenge with the site was that it was geographically interesting and presented hilly topography for a site, which presented some grading challenges to appropriately drain water and not erode landscape materials. The designer worked closely with the work team to integrate eco-friendly methods, retaining the environmental and geographical linear gradients and maintain site accessibility. Additionally, the designer installed a custom irrigation for water conservation to encourage and promote plant health. The outcome is a spectacular outdoor space that relates well to its natural environment. The outpouring of satisfaction from the client was that the revitalized landscape is a wonderful location where family can get together and enjoy time to relax or entertain.
