In the first meeting with the client, we worked to establish a few goals: an inviting outdoor living space, improvements to the existing plantings, and year-round visual interest. To achieve this goal we used a mixture of native plantings, hardy perennials and ornamental grasses to ensure plantings will thrive in the unique climate of Connecticut. Additionally, a unique part of the is the custom stone patio, made with locally sourced bluestone, which is the heart of the area. The patio provides an inviting place for family gatherings, but also creates a connection from the home to the vibrant gardens in the yard. Another component is a beautiful and functional retaining wall, made from natural fieldstone, which provides interest in the area as well as remedies a sloped yard. Throughout the process, there were challenges, such as drainage and conditions for planting. Through innovated design and strategic grading we were able to work through the challenges and create a landscape that creates both beauty and function. The end result is a cohesive mix of hardscaping and softscaping that excites the clients and is a wonderful addition to their natural surroundings. The pop of color with the seasonal flowers packages with the pleasant sound from a newly installed water feature creates an atmosphere of relaxation. And the clients left feeling delighted with their newly created space, realizing that you don't need to go far for an occasional getaway since it is now in their backyard. They appreciate the attention to detail and the quality that Gardens by Design provided.
