Organic Fruit Orchard by HomeHarvest Edible Landscapes and Construction In the heart of Greater Boston, HomeHarvest's Organic Fruit Orchard is a food garden combining sustainable design with edibles. The orchard is large, containing countless fruit-bearing trees and plants including, but not limited to, apple, pear, cherry, and blueberry bushes, all of which were planted with consideration for their suitability to the local climate and soil. There were some hurdles an uneven terrain, a few spots that hardly got any sun; but our team managed to create a functioning aesthetic. To tackle these issues, we constructed terraced planting beds, utilising oak timber from our reclamation yard and ensuring that they drained well and were positioned for maximum sunlight. We also added organic compost and mulch to the soil to nourished it and create healthy plants and local biodiversity between species. Brough says their decision to add organic dirt paths from decomposed granite, crisscrossing the green landscape, also adds to the aesthetic qualities of the orchard. Climbing vines rise above the ground, thanks to one-of-a-kind trellises made from sustainably harvested cedar, a space-saving design feature that introduces vertical interest. The result is a rich, purposeful little ecosystem that delights the senses, and while that is wonderful in its own right, it is a seed that can sprout into a relationship with place and our role in its sustainable continuity. Needless to say, the end result left the client speechless, and their formerly unused backyard quickly became a backyard bounty producing fruit, and a lovely setting for family get-togethers!
