The renovation of the site is nearly complete and marks a successful merger of the area's natural characteristics with modern aesthetics to produce an outdoor retreat. At the heart of the scheme sits an eye-catching native plant garden with drought-tolerant plants, which enhances local habitat and environment, while maintaining visual interest through the seasons. Materials were selected with great care to create graceful paths and terraces out of reclaimed wood wherever possible and locally-sourced stone as well. Areas for sitting were all custom-built using natural materials to invite visitors to lounge. To enhance the experience in evening twilight, the lights were designed to wash the plants in light while highlighting lush greenery. Building this did have challenges, especially once considering local coastal regulations and how to design for drainage, due to the regular exposure to floods and storms created by tides and beach erosion. GEL's team, with a depth of experience in managing coastal sites developed a meaningful relationship with the client and in the end resolved the drainage both by a drainage system and also selecting plant species which allowed native plants to flourish in sandy soil. The outcome is a creative backyard with not only the clients vision fulfilled, but also an enhancement to the property value. The Venice Beach House environment provided a warm welcome to visitors, and a great place to entertain family and friends, while feeling the coastal influences in the home.
