About This Project

Sunset Residence Designed by GEL: Griffin Enright Landscape Located in Los Angeles, the Sunset Residence captures the concept of fine residential landscape architecture in context with the home's striking architecture. The GEL team was challenged to respurpose an underutilized exterior space into a vibrant refuge that engaged with the natural surroundings. The design featured a curated assortment of native California plant materials, selected both for their drought-tolerant characteristics and stunning colors, to create a dynamic display through the changing seasons. We installed a beautiful flagstone path to move through the lush gardens, which was locally sourced from several nearby quarries. The path serves as a durable but functional means of wayfinding across the landscape. The centerpiece of the landscape was a peaceful koi pond with a waterfall designed to provide ambience and wildlife habitat. Custom built seating areas made from sustainable sourced teak wood were sited around the koi pond to increase the potential for landscape engagement, relaxation, and enjoyment of the surroundings. To mitigate the site's many varying amounts of sun exposure, we employed a layering plant method that combined plant materials that thrive in sun and shade to create primary, secondary, and tertiary layers of materials in the landscape. We designed a water-wise irrigation system to mitigate plant mortality while keeping the gardens lush. The result is an enchanting outdoor respite enhancing the property's value and providing homeowners a getaway from the chaos of city life. Our attention to detail and insistence on quality craft proved beneficial to the client, who called the Sunset Residence a true GEL landscape during the final walk-through.
